Customer Review: Throw out your Garmin owner's manual and use this instead.
Two easy steps to becoming a proficient GPS user: 1/ Throw out the Garmin owner's manual that comes with your unit, and 2/ Purchase "Getting to Grips with GPS". I bought this book after attending two GPS day courses run by the authors and can say that this up-to-date book is a model of clarity and, most importantly, usability. I find it hard to see how it could be bettered. The book covers both Garmin and Magellan devices and it doesn't matter if your specific model isn't pictured in the book. All Garmin screens and functionality are near identical and I'm guessing Magellan will be the same, too. So, whatever unit you use, you are well catered for. The introductory chapters are superb, and the graphics throughout the book are exemplary. Digital mapping is also clearly explained and presents an unbiased view of the several mapping companies out there. I am very puzzled by the couple of less-than-favourable comments below - what are you looking for exactly? For beginners, I cannot find a better, more practical introduction to the subject than this book, written BY users FOR users. In conjunction with the guide, I also recommend attending one or more of the practical day courses which the authors run, held throughout the UK (see their web site). You will become not only a GPS power user, but also a much safer and more confident walker. In summary, buy the book in complete confidence - IMHO, user guides/manuals really don't get any better than this. Garmin, et al, PLEASE take note. By the way, I have no connection whatever to the authors or their Company.
Customer Review: For me, this is the best book on the market
I have read the other critical reviews posted here. I have looked at the main books on the market in the bookshops and decided to go for this book. Yes - it is written by an organisation that runs GPS training courses but I think they understand what people need to know? The step-by-step guides are NOTHING like the ones in the user manual. They are really useful, being written by people who seem to have an ability to explian not just what you need to do but why. Virtually everything you can do with your GPS is covered in a logical stage by stage approach using screen diagrams that show you what you should be seeing on the screen. I think this book is well worth the money. It is nearly 200 pages long and virtually every page has something of use to the reader. In my view if you buy this book you will not be disappointed.
